Enjoy The Best Of Florida With Key West Fishing Charters

The perfect holiday destination is one with great weather, stunning beaches, a good nightlife and plenty of things to do. It’s even better when you don’t have to travel halfway around the world to get there but can simply drive down. The Florida Keys is one of those destinations and Key West fishing charters will ensure that you have the action-packed holiday of a lifetime.

Key West is the main city on the eponymous island which is probably the most famous of the Florida Keys. Notable people from playwrights like Tennessee Williams to US presidents like Harry S Truman have been making this island their destination of choice to get away from the winter cold. The one person who will probably always be associated with the island is author Ernest Hemingway who, while staying here, became a fishing enthusiast.

Trying to catch big game fish like Hemingway did is still one of the most popular activities in the Florida Keys. To snag the big ones, however, you need to go beyond the shallow waters of the reefs. In the deep waters further out you’ll find tuna, sailfish and marlin. You may also catch what the locals call dolphin fish but what is usually known as mahi-mahi.

Another option is to go for more variety by using light tackle. For this you’ll need a smaller vessel that can navigate the reefs. Sharks, snapper and groupon are some of the species you can catch but the area is renowned for its tarpon, which visit these waters in spring. If the charter package doesn’t include snorkeling gear, bring your own because you’ll want to get a closer look of the wrecks and reef life too.

Flats fishing is another popular pastime in the Keys. There are areas close to shore where the water is very shallow and you’ll need a flats skiff, which is a special boat for the purpose of navigating the shallows. Barracuda hunt around here but the Key West Grand Slam requires you to catch a permit, a tarpon and a bonefish in one day.

Some people don’t like the solitude of a fishing trip or chartering a boat may simply be too expensive for them. If you fall into this category, going out on a party boat may be the option for you. With one of these, you share the boat with a large group, which makes it a great way to meet new people and to take along the kids or friends who don’t really like catching fish. This is probably not for you if you’re a serious angler, though.

One of the factors that make Key West such a popular destination is that there is warm weather throughout the year. Morning showers may occur from May to October and there is a risk of hurricanes. However, it’s also low season so the city of Key West will be less crowded and accommodation will be cheaper and easier to find.

Key West fishing charters are easy to find and book online. In the city itself you’ll also find plenty of charter companies. If it’s a beautiful day and you wonder what to do, head to one of these for the adventure of a lifetime and you may even have dinner sorted.
